Our long-term health investment vision continues to focus on reducing youth obesity rates and the prevalence of Type 2 diabetes diagnosis in youth.
- On November 5, 2018, the Iowa Public Health Association released the 2016-17 data from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation that 1 in 6 youth, ages 10 to 17 are obese.
- Nationally, 15.8% of youth in this age range are obese. Iowa has the 10th highest obesity rate in youth ages 10 to 17 at 17.7%, and the 4th highest adult obesity rate in the nation at 36.4%. In the Muscatine County Schools, there are Type 1 and Type 2 youth diabetes diagnoses.
- Research has proven kids who get more physical activity do better in school than children that do not.
- Researchers found students who exercise more score higher on math, language and memory tests. Exercise increases the blood flow to the brain, stimulating a sense of well-being.
